India went on to win the five-Test inaugural series 2-1, with two matches drawn. The series established the foundation of the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry.
The early Test years
The two countries met in another five-Test series in 1954-55, but every Test was drawn. They met again in 1960-61, when all five Tests also ended in draws. These results explain why Test cricket became an important but often highly attritional part of the rivalry.
Bilateral cricket interrupted
The India-Pakistan cricket relationship was interrupted after the 1960s. The 1965 and 1971 wars contributed to an 18-year gap in Test meetings. The teams did not resume international cricket against each other until 1978-79.
Cricket resumes in 1978
Pakistan hosted India’s return to bilateral cricket in 1978-79. The revival brought both Test and ODI cricket into the rivalry. The first ODI between the teams was played at Quetta on 1 October 1978, with India winning by four runs.
The 1980s and Sharjah era
The 1980s saw Pakistan become a powerful force in both Test and ODI cricket. Players such as Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram and later Waqar Younis became central figures.
Neutral venues, particularly Sharjah, became important because India and Pakistan were not always able to play regular bilateral cricket at home.
The World Cup era
India and Pakistan first met in an ODI World Cup in 1992. India won that match, beginning a World Cup sequence that would become one of the most unusual records in international cricket.

The first Test at Delhi was played from 16-18 October 1952 and ended in India’s innings-and-70-run victory.
The famous 1999 Delhi Test
Anil Kumble’s performance in Delhi in February 1999 remains one of the defining moments of the Test rivalry. He took 10 wickets for 74 runs in Pakistan’s second innings, becoming only the second bowler in Test history at the time to take all ten wickets in an innings.
Sehwag’s 309 at Multan
