The India National Cricket Team vs Pakistan National Cricket Team Timeline is more than a list of scores and results. It is the history of a rivalry that has stretched from the first Test in Delhi in 1952 to modern ICC tournaments, producing legendary performances from players such as Sachin Tendulkar, Wasim Akram, Virat Kohli, Babar Azam, Rohit Sharma and many others. Pakistan’s first Test came in October 1952, with India hosting the inaugural series and winning it 2-1.
The rivalry was interrupted for long periods because of political tensions and wars between the two countries. Bilateral cricket eventually resumed in 1978-79, but over time the teams increasingly moved away from regular bilateral contests. Today, India and Pakistan most often meet in ICC events and the Asia Cup, making each encounter unusually important. The result is a rivalry shaped by history, scarcity, tournament pressure and some of international cricket’s most memorable matches.
Data note: This article covers the senior men’s international teams and is accurate through 5 September 2026. Under-19 and women’s matches are excluded.

India vs Pakistan Cricket Rivalry: A Brief History
First meeting in 1952
Pakistan became an ICC Test-playing nation in 1952 and played its first Test against India at Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla from 16 to 18 October. India won by an innings and 70 runs.
India went on to win the five-Test inaugural series 2-1, with two matches drawn. The series established the foundation of the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry.
The early Test years
The two countries met in another five-Test series in 1954-55, but every Test was drawn. They met again in 1960-61, when all five Tests also ended in draws. These results explain why Test cricket became an important but often highly attritional part of the rivalry.
Bilateral cricket interrupted
The India-Pakistan cricket relationship was interrupted after the 1960s. The 1965 and 1971 wars contributed to an 18-year gap in Test meetings. The teams did not resume international cricket against each other until 1978-79.
Cricket resumes in 1978
Pakistan hosted India’s return to bilateral cricket in 1978-79. The revival brought both Test and ODI cricket into the rivalry. The first ODI between the teams was played at Quetta on 1 October 1978, with India winning by four runs.
The 1980s and Sharjah era
The 1980s saw Pakistan become a powerful force in both Test and ODI cricket. Players such as Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram and later Waqar Younis became central figures.
Neutral venues, particularly Sharjah, became important because India and Pakistan were not always able to play regular bilateral cricket at home.
The World Cup era
India and Pakistan first met in an ODI World Cup in 1992. India won that match, beginning a World Cup sequence that would become one of the most unusual records in international cricket.
India subsequently defeated Pakistan at the 1996, 1999, 2003, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023 World Cups. The ICC confirmed after the 2023 meeting that India had won all eight World Cup encounters.
The T20 era
The rivalry entered another phase with the introduction of the T20 World Cup in 2007.
The inaugural tournament produced two India-Pakistan classics: a tied group match decided by a bowl-out and the final, which India won by five runs.
Modern tournament rivalry
Since the end of the regular bilateral era, India and Pakistan have frequently met in the Asia Cup, Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup.
The modern rivalry has produced contrasting results. Pakistan’s 2017 Champions Trophy final victory was emphatic, while India has dominated many subsequent major encounters, including the 2022 and 2024 T20 World Cup matches, the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and three Asia Cup 2025 meetings.

India vs Pakistan Rivalry: Why It Is So Important
The India-Pakistan rivalry is unusual because the teams do not regularly play bilateral cricket. This scarcity increases the importance of each meeting.
A bilateral series can contain several matches and provide opportunities for teams to recover from a poor result. India-Pakistan encounters in ICC tournaments are different. Often there is only one opportunity, meaning a single dropped catch, batting collapse or outstanding spell can define the entire contest.
The rivalry has also featured several generations of great players. From Gavaskar, Miandad, Imran Khan and Kapil Dev to Tendulkar, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Dhoni, Kohli, Rohit and Babar, some of cricket’s biggest names have shared the field.
The result is a contest with enormous television audiences, intense fan interest and a remarkable archive of memorable matches.

India vs Pakistan Match History: The Modern Trend
The long-term record and the recent record tell different stories.
Pakistan have the stronger overall international record because of their historical advantage in Tests and ODIs. However, India’s results in major tournaments have been considerably stronger in the modern era.
The contrast is particularly obvious in the ODI World Cup, where India are 8-0 against Pakistan. In the T20 World Cup, Pakistan broke India’s streak in 2021, but India won the next four meetings in 2022, 2024 and 2026 while also maintaining a strong overall record.
The 2025 Asia Cup provided another striking example: India defeated Pakistan three times in the same tournament, including the final.
